Dietfurt: Where Bavarian Charm Meets Chinese Carnival

Dietfurt an der Altmühl is a charming town in the Neumarkt district of Bavaria, Germany. Renowned for its medieval architecture and scenic setting along the Altmühl River in the Altmühltal Nature Park, Dietfurt stands out as a picturesque destination.

One distinctive cultural event in Dietfurt is the “Bayerisch-China” Chinese carnival held annually on Fat Thursday, following Christian Lent. During this carnival, a citizen is symbolically crowned “Emperor Ko-Huang-Di,” while the mayor is demoted to the role of the emperor’s high official. Other participants take on roles such as eunuchs and imperial guards. The carnival, marked by vibrant festivities, lasts until Rose Monday.

Throughout the carnival, streets and alleys are adorned with posters featuring the Chinese characters “Fu” (luck) and “Xi” (happiness). Additionally, red lanterns and flags with Chinese dragon patterns contribute to the festive atmosphere. It’s noteworthy that Dietfurt’s Chinese carnival represents a unique and lively celebration of Chinese culture in the heart of Germany.
