Feeling lost in Germany

The German idiom “Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof” (I only understand train station) is used to express a lack of understanding, often in a humorous or exaggerated way. The phrase is thought to have originated in the early 20th century, when train travel was becoming increasingly common. People who were not familiar with the announcements and terminology used at train stations would often say that they “only understood train station,” meaning that they were lost and confused. I always used this idiom at university when the professors asked me questions, and they were not very happy.
