Karersee – The Enchanting Emerald Lake of the Dolomites

Karersee, also known as Lago di Carezza, is a stunning alpine lake in South Tyrol, Italy. Nestled within the Dolomites, this small, emerald-green lake is known for its crystal-clear waters and vibrant colors, which are especially striking at sunrise and sunset. Karersee was formed by melting glaciers, and its clarity comes from its natural spring-fed source. Surrounded by dense pine forests and towering mountain peaks, it creates a perfect reflection of the nearby Latemar range on calm days.

The lake lies in a bilingual region where both Italian and German are official languages, due to South Tyrol’s historical connection to Austria before it became part of Italy after World War I. Today, this unique cultural blend is cherished, with local traditions reflecting both Germanic and Italian influences.

Wildlife around Karersee includes deer, foxes, marmots, and occasionally the rare Eurasian lynx. Birdwatchers may spot golden eagles and various alpine bird species, adding to the lake’s enchanting natural atmosphere.

According to legend, a beautiful mermaid once lived in Karersee. A wizard fell in love with her and, in an attempt to win her heart, cast a rainbow from Latemar mountain over the lake. The mermaid, however, saw through his plan and disappeared into the water forever. In frustration, the wizard shattered the rainbow, and its colors fell into the lake, which is said to be why Karersee shimmers with rainbow hues.
