Marienplatz: Home of Munich's Charming Glockenspiel

Marienplatz is the central square in Munich, Germany, and is one of the city’s most famous landmarks. It has been the heart of Munich’s social, cultural, and economic life for centuries. The square is surrounded by beautiful historic buildings, including the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) with its iconic Glockenspiel, or “dancing clock.”

The Glockenspiel is a tourist attraction on the facade of the New Town Hall. It consists of two levels with 43 bells and 32 life-sized figures. The clock reenacts two stories from Munich’s history: the top part depicts a jousting tournament held in 1568 to celebrate the marriage of Duke Wilhelm V, while the bottom part portrays the Schäfflertanz, or Cooper’s Dance, which was performed in 1517 during a plague outbreak as a symbol of hope and renewal.

The dancing clock chimes at 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM daily, as well as at 5:00 PM from March through October. It’s a beloved attraction that draws crowds of spectators to Marienplatz to watch the charming mechanical performance and listen to the delightful melodies of the bells.

Marienplatz(瑪利恩廣場)是德國慕尼黑的中心廣場,是市內最著名的地標之一。
