Aoshima: Japan's Cat Island Where Felines Outnumber Humans

Aoshima, also known as Cat Island, is a small island in Japan’s Ehime Prefecture, famous for having more cats than human residents. Once a thriving fishing village, its population dwindled after World War II as young people left for cities. With fewer than 10 elderly residents today, the cat population surged due to the lack of natural predators and human intervention. The cats, originally introduced to control rodents on fishing boats, now outnumber the humans by nearly 6 to 1. Aoshima has since gained global attention, drawing cat lovers from around the world.

青島（Aoshima），又稱為貓島，位於日本愛媛縣的小島，以貓的數量多於居民而聞名。這裡曾經是繁榮的漁村，但二戰後人口逐漸減少，年輕人紛紛離開去城市發展。如今島上居民不到10位老年人，貓的數量因缺乏天敵和人為干預而激增。這些貓最初被引入是為了控制漁船上的老鼠，現在牠們的數量是人類的近六倍。青島因此吸引了全球的愛貓者前來參觀。

Aoshima, auch als Katzeninsel bekannt, ist eine kleine Insel in der Präfektur Ehime, Japan, die berühmt dafür ist, mehr Katzen als menschliche Bewohner zu haben. Einst ein florierendes Fischerdorf, ging die Bevölkerung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg zurück, da viele junge Menschen in die Städte zogen. Heute leben weniger als 10 ältere Menschen auf der Insel, während die Katzenpopulation aufgrund fehlender Raubtiere und menschlicher Eingriffe stark angestiegen ist. Ursprünglich wurden die Katzen eingeführt, um Ratten auf Fischerbooten zu kontrollieren, und übertreffen nun die Menschen im Verhältnis 6:1. Aoshima hat dadurch weltweite Aufmerksamkeit erlangt und zieht Katzenliebhaber an.
